Since my
commentary last week I have been doing a lot of work on the business
size to advance WAM.
I confirmed
late last week after a conversation with the promoter of Locobazooka
that WAM will indeed be involved with the event. This is a great
opportunity for WAM to get its name out and strut its stuff in
front of thousands of people. I am in the process of getting a
nice new logo for WAM. Our current logo, which was designed by
WAM Chief Financial Officer and Vice President - Financial Management
Lee-Ann Malloy is nice, but I am looking for something that stands
out more and is eye catching. I had an idea for one floating in
my head and brought it to a graphic designer whom is making my
idea a reality. Stay tuned for in a few weeks WAM will debut its
new corporate seal.
Earlier this
week I sent out the first batch of paperwork to the state government
to make WAM an official non-profit organization. Since we donate
our show proceeds and don't keep a penny for ourselves the official
non-profit status opens some doors for us that will help WAM grow.
It is a lot of paperwork and we will have to answer to Uncle Sam
but it is definitely worth it. 99.9% of the wrestling federations
out there fill the promoter's pockets with money. However, WAM
Board of Directors do it for the love of the business therefore
we donate event proceeds to charity. WAM is run by a passion for
the business and not greed. So people can come to our events and
be entertained for a few hours and know that their money is going
to be donated to a worth while non-profit organization or charity.
Everyone
in the wrestling business knows that we are in a big lull. People
aren't as interested in the wrestling business as say they were
5 years ago. Just like anything else the business goes in cycles
of popularity. I remember 15 years ago in my youth there were
many wrestling federations that ran the Worcester Territory. My
uncle used to bring me to the shows and I loved them. I was a
little too young to understand everything and appreciate what
these guys in the squared circle were doing, but I still enjoyed
the shows in my own way as I could as a young'n. I will never
forget this one show in particular at the Worcester Auditorium.
I was walking around the corner and walked into this huge leg
that was bigger than me. I looked up and saw Andre the Giant peering
down at me. I was like 8 years old, and at the time kayfabe was
much more kept solidly so all I knew of Andre was what I saw on
television. So I was naturally frightened. He asked me if I was
okay. I said that I was and he shook my hand and gave me this
big smile and told me to enjoy the show. I will never forget that
moment. This giant turned out to be a very gentle giant. Anyway,
over the next 5-10 years the big regional independent wrestling
federations all either got bought out by Vince McMahon or folded.
Every now and again several feds from out of state would run shows
in Worcester, but for the most part Worcester became dead to indy
wrestling. In the past few years several indy feds have tried
to run in Worcester but never achieved much success if any. Then
in 1999 WAM appeared on the scene. For two years WAM held events
all over Worcester and drew crowds of 350-650 people which is
very above the normal for wrestling federations in New England.
Down south they can get a few thousand people to attend a show
but that just doesn't happen up this way. WAM did what it could
to bring indy wrestling back to the area. WAM did so with great
success. Then in early 2001 I fell very ill. I am still ill this
day and will be for the rest of my life, but I have stabilized.
The other 2 big people with WAM, Bob "Vicious Virgin"
Case got serious with his base career and made it to the pro's.
Michael "Sonny Suavino" Ricardi focused on his college
courses. WAM went on hiatus for about 2 years. Then the situation
changed and we had the time to devote serious time and effort
into bringing WAM back. Of course the majority of people had forgotten
about WAM. Its just like anything else in the business. Unless
you see it frequently you forget about it. So that means we have
to work even harder this time to get the WAM name out there. There
are now 4 driven people at the helm of WAM and with our passion
for the business we will take WAM to heights that we would never
have imagined possible only a few years ago. The New England area
is quite saturated with indy federations. There are over 30 to
be exact. Each fighting to survive in its own little territory
or region. It is difficult for any new, or returning federation
to break through again these days. The die hard indy fans whom
follow indy wrestling like most people follow MLB and NBA have
their favorite feds to follow and know which of those aren't so
hot. I follow the local indy wrestling scene just as much as a
normal guy follows the red sox or the patriots. I see some very
good wrestling feds in new england. I see some that don't have
too much of a chance of making it anywhere. But give WAM time
and I think.. no.. I know we will make a big mark on the local
indy scene. The sky is the limit for us. Watch us fly.
Until
next time... KEEP IT EXTREME!!!
